Who I am

From job seeker to career coach

I am not a recruiter who moved into coaching. I am someone who went through the exact search my clients are in now, twice, including once after being laid off.

Sanyam Sareen – Job Search Expert

The short version

  • Came to Canada as a frontend engineer with zero local experience
  • During peak COVID, landed 9 internship interviews
  • Secured my first full-time role in 2 months, with 5 interviews
  • Got laid off later, and felt the same confusion and anxiety many job seekers feel today
  • Reworked my strategy and bounced back with 6 interview calls in 3 weeks
  • Landed a full-stack engineer role in under 2 months after the layoff
  • Now I coach others through the same system, with clarity and confidence

The longer version

Why I do this

The layoff is the part that matters. Everything before it, I could put down to working hard. Everything after it, I had to figure out properly.

When I was let go 2 days before the New Years Eve 2022, I did what almost everyone does: I applied everywhere. Hundreds of applications, a resume I had barely touched since the last search, and a LinkedIn profile that read like a job description. Weeks of nothing. The problem was never effort, I had plenty of that. The problem was that none of it was aimed anywhere.

What changed things was narrowing down instead of widening out. I picked a small set of roles I could genuinely compete for, rewrote everything around measurable impact instead of responsibilities, and started talking to people rather than applying at them. Six interview calls came back in three weeks. I signed a new role in under two months.

That gap, between how hard people work and how little of it is pointed in the right direction, is the whole reason this business exists. Almost nobody who comes to me is underqualified. They are unclear, badly positioned, and invisible to the systems doing the filtering. Those are all fixable problems.

Most people do not need to become a better candidate. They need to become a legible one.
